With the new school year already in full swing, the NEWS Foundation is delighted to announce it is working, once again, with The Yorkshire Evening Post on a project for schools in and around the city of Leeds. The project, titled ‘Making The News’ will allow primary school children to explore the news over a six-week period using copies of The Yorkshire Evening Post delivered directly to their schools. As well as looking at the news, they will examine how a newspaper front page is put together.  At the end of the six week project, the children will be challenged to make their own versions of a Yorkshire Evening Post front page – the page they would like to see!

Today, Facebook has taken out full page adverts in many national newspapers with tips on how to spot what they call ‘false news’ but is widely reported as ‘fake news’. These TEN TIPS include being skeptical of headlines(please note the US spelling used in the adverts instead of the UK ‘sceptical’), investigating the source and checking for evidence.
At The NEWS Foundation, we regard education about news as essential to our understanding of the world in which we live and are constant in our hope that news will become an everyday, essential component of effective class learning and teaching. By supporting our teachers in their work, we will strive towards our key tenet of creating ‘a more knowledgeable, literate and understanding future society’
